The original name penned for his community was the “German Charitable Backwoodsmens’ Benevolent Society.” Soon after, Baur changed the name of his future utopia to the “Christian German Agricultural and Benevolent Society of Ora et Labora,” better known as “Ora Labora,” which is Latin for “pray [and] work.” It was to be a place where individuals could live in harmony with one another.
