The Huron County Historical Society’s third quarterly meeting is Thursday, October 10, 2019, at the Port Austin Area Historical Society History Center located at 1424 Pointe Aux Barques Road one and a half miles east of town. Tours begin at 5:00 p.m., with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7:00 p.m. The evening’s program, “History through Grandma’s Button Box,” is by Michigan Button Society member, Nancy Bitterling. All interested in our County’s history are welcome to attend. The History Center has several new buildings to explore along with other new artifacts. Come early and enjoy your tour.
Michigan History Alliance – Great Lakes Bay & Thumb Region meeting on November 7 (Thursday), 9 a.m. – noon. It’s being hosted by and our friends at the Maccabees Hall Museum, 6733 Prospect St., Caseville, MI 48725. You can register online at http://hsmichigan.org/programs/michigan-history-alliance/; if you prefer, just RSVP to my email. We’ll have coffee and munchies ready for you.
The morning’s discussion topic? Problem artifacts. All museums have them: the ones you can’t identify; don’t know how to catalog (Chenhall never mentioned this one!); don’t know how you got it; can’t get title to it; need to get rid of it. . . . Bring some from your collections, or photos of them, to spark group problem-solving. Maybe we can solve your problem!
Our afternoon (1-4 p.m.) History Skills Workshop is Fading Photos: How to Identify, Scan, and Archive Historical Photographs, and I’ll be presenting it myself. Here’s the description:
“This workshop assists small museums, historical societies, and interested collectors in identifying and preserving their historical photographs. The presenter will review basic conservation techniques, storage recommendations, digital scanning, and how to approach cataloging issues. There will also be plenty of time for participants to ask questions and have hands-on experiences.”
As always, there’s no charge to attend the morning meeting. The afternoon workshop is only $39 for the Historical Society of Michigan members; two representatives from each of our member organizations can attend at the members’ rate.
Hope to see you there!
